3 SEO Mistakes Small Businesses Should Avoid

Posted by | G Riar |
Search Engine Optimization, SEO, mistakes to avoid.

If you own a small business, you probably know how important it is to have consistent traffic coming to your website. One of the best ways to accomplish this is through search engine optimization. But because it can be such a mysterious and confusing topic, many small business owners end up sabotaging their search engine optimization results by using tactics that are either ineffective or are frowned-upon by Google. If you make the following mistakes, you’re likely not going to see the results you’re looking for (and your site could even be penalized, in certain cases). Looking for better Bakersfield SEO for your business? Depringo is here to help. But in the meantime, make sure you haven’t made the following three mistakes with your internet marketing.

    1. Thin or poorly-written content
Understandably, many small business owners don’t have the time or experience needed to write their own website or blog content. That’s what content writers are for. But you need to be discerning; not just any content writer will do. Around 72% of marketers around the world say that relevant content creation is the most effective search engine optimization tactic you can use. The key word there is “relevant.” If your content is poorly-written, which often occurs when you outsource content creation from a foreign country, it’s most likely going to look spammy to both your website visitors and to Google. And if the content is stuffed with keywords and no substance, that’s definitely going to send up a red flag. Content is king, so make sure to focus your efforts on creating original, interesting, natural-sounding content that will provide some kind of valuable knowledge to readers.

    1. Forgetting about local listings and search results
With each Google algorithm update, the emphasis on local search results has increased. This is particularly advantageous for small businesses, many of which rely on local customers for the majority of their revenue. Since a significant portion of web searches are conducted specifically to find local search results, you’ll want to optimize these efforts in Google Places and review sites like Yelp. You’ll also probably want to focus on those geo-tagged keywords, rather than broader ones; not only will they be easier to rank on than the ones national chains use, but you’ll get a much better ROI.

  1. Not focusing on site experience
It’s not just about hitting those keywords. Your web design needs to look great and function well to make your efforts worthwhile. If users aren’t easily able to navigate your website on desktop and mobile, they aren’t likely to stay on it very long. Google can see how long it takes for users to go back to the search results page, so if they don’t stay on your site very long, Google will probably pick up on it. Your site may even get a lower ranking because of it. When in doubt, simpler is better. It’s better to make it easy to use your website rather than make it look cutting-edge.
